We're learning together as a community

Why You Should Join

Open Mastery is a truly unique opportunity to collaborate in a way that’s never been achievable before in our industry — with data.  We’ll be researching strategies to solve some of the biggest challenges in software development, running experiments in our own environments, and sharing our knowledge with the world.  We’ll be pioneers in the art of data-driven mastery and living on the bleeding edge of discovery.  That’s pretty cool.

Another great reason to join Open Mastery is you’ll get to work with some of the most amazing talent in our industry.  At a minimum, we’ll have an awesome conversation. At a maximum, we’ll start a revolution that changes the world.  Rather than everyone learning on their own, we’re creating a distributed problem-solving network so we can breakdown the challenges and learn together.

The people in Open Mastery will become your friends, your comrades, and people that care about your success. We are here to listen, to understand your pain, and will do our best to help you succeed.  That’s our commitment to you.

Open Mastery Membership

FREE

FREE Membership

You can join Open Mastery as an individual or as part of our company network.  To join as an individual, simply sign up, and we’ll invite you to Slack, show you how to measure your pain, and you can participate in all of our community activities.

If you join as a company, create an Open Mastery Circle within your company and decide who will be Circle Leader.  The Circle Leader will the primary contact for integrating with the Open Mastery leadership team, and the organizer of internal discussions.  You can elect a new Circle Leader at any time.

We’ll be adding a paid tier of membership later on when we start building enterprise tools, but membership and participation in Open Mastery’s peer learning network is free, and will always remain free.

Read the Book

If you’d like to introduce Idea Flow into your company, first vet the book, so you can make a recommendation for Idea Flow based on first hand experience.  When you sign up, we’ll send you a free e-book.

The next step is to create a reading group.  It doesn’t have to be complicated.  Send out an open invite to everyone on your engineering floor, or post to a community mailing list, and we’ll provide free e-books for all attendees.   Our goal is to minimize friction with organizational adoption and help you get the conversation started between managers and engineers.

On the last reading group session, we’ll setup a call with Janelle and your team for a final Q&A and group discussion.

Measure Your Pain

If your team is ready to take the plunge into the world of data-driven mastery, you won’t have have to do it alone.  Start with a one-month commitment for gathering Idea Flow data and find out what’s slowing you down.   We’ll support your team and help you get started.

Since we’re in the early stages of tool development, initially, we will only be supporting Intellij and Eclipse users.  For anyone using a different editor:

The Idea Flow Mapping plugin is designed to be light-weight and easy to port to any editor.  However, we will need some help from the community for building plugins.  Let us know if you’re willing to pitch in with plugin development.

During the ramp up period, we’ll meet with your team once per week, answer any questions you have, and help your team work through the initial learning curve.  At the end of the month, you’ll have detailed data on your team’s biggest causes of pain.

Join the Discussion

After you identify your top three pains, we’ll schedule an online problem-solving discussion over Slack to dig into the details of your specific problems.

To prepare for the session, describe the patterns you see in the data and share your discoveries in a blog.  We’ll read your blog prior to the meeting, ask you lots of questions, and discuss strategies for how to improve productivity.  You’ll walk away from the discussion with the most important ingredient to a successful improvement effort: a better understanding of your problems.

Open Mastery is a pay it forward community that depends on everyone pitching in a bit of their time.  We’ll help each other diagnose problems, contribute our ideas,  and distill our knowledge into patterns and principles.
